Walk the hallowed halls of the SAINTS for the last time, before most of the original building is torn down this summer to make way for the New Building! All students, teachers, administrators and support staff are welcome to attend the 110th Anniversary of Langley High School and Langley Secondary School. Be there to connect with old friends, teachers, office staff, principals, vice-principals, custodians, coaches, old girlfriends, old boyfriends, the nerds, the cool kids and the jocks. GRAD GAB!

  • UBC Pharmacy Open House – In celebration of the upcoming Pharmacy Awareness Month in March, we are hosting a Pharmacy Information Event (PIE Night) on March 15, 2019, and we invite your students to attend. This is great opportunity for prospective students, particularly those in Grades 11 and 12, who are interested in pursuing Pharmacy as a potential career. This event will feature 4 speakers from all aspects of the profession, including hospital, community, academia, as well as a current 4th-year pharmacy student. Students will hear about each of their experiences as well as get a chance to network with all the speakers. The Faculty’s admissions advisor will also be present to give helpful information on the Entry-to-Practice PharmD Program, admission requirements, and the application process. Interested students can also stay behind for an optional tour of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Building. Below are the event details:

  • FINAL REMINDER! Alice Brown Scholarship – Any grade 12 student who attended Alice Brown Elementary are welcome to come by counselling to pick up a scholarship application.
  • FINAL REMINDER! Gradation Transitions (GT) Presentations – Mandatory for Graduation! – Presentations make up part 3 of the GT Package, and the final part of the mandatory course for Graduation.  Students should have already completed Parts 1 (on myBlueprint) and Parts 2 (Handed in), and are now getting ready for their presentations in the library on March 5 and 6.  The presentation details are in the GT package that students have already received; they will be presenting one-on-one to a member of staff or a member of the community.  To support students, we are having a Grade 12 assembly on February 25 during Flex to give more information and to answer any questions students may have.
  • THIS WEEK!  GrantMe Scholarships Evening!  LSS will be hosting an evening to assist students and parents who are looking to get important information on how to navigate the huge, unwieldy, and potentially lucrative world of scholarships on Wednesday, March 6, in the Library Learning Commons, at 6:30 pm.  Former Langley District student Madison Guy will share her in-depth knowledge and hopefully help students in ALL GRADES get the advantage they need when applying to scholarships and bursaries!

  • TWO WEEKS LEFT TO APPLY!  SASSY AWARDS ARE BACK!
    • SASSY is once again giving away $14,000 to 21 deserving students; the vast majority are SD35 Grade 12 students.  The deadline to submit applications is Friday March 15, 2019.     • “Greetings from the Dry Grad Committee:
    • Thank you to everyone who has been supporting the dry grad so far. Now that we are into the second semester, the crunch is on, and we couldn’t do it without you. To that end, there are a few dates to pencil in on your calendar.
    • May 11: POKER NIGHT. We are still working out the details but are looking forward to bringing a little slice of Vegas to Langley and hosting a poker night fundraiser.
    • June 9: PRESTON DRIVE IT EVENT. Preston will bring a selection of their vehicles and will give us $25 for every test drive (and just around the parking lot counts). Even “N” drivers can participate. We are hoping to make a whole event out of this. Car Wash, BBQ etc.

LSS MUSICAL “GUYS AND DOLLS” HAS ENDED TO THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!

  • Congratulations to the cast, crew, and staff who were a part of the musical Guys and Dolls – you were a part of something special, acting, singing, and dancing your way into the hearts of audiences over the past 2 weeks.  You created memories for us, and for yourselves, that few will ever forget.  So, congratulations, and thank you – your hard work, your dedication, your attention to detail, your perseverance, and your inspiration over the past 6 months became a gift in the form of a beautifully performed 3-hour musical to your audiences, and to LSS itself.

  • After Thursday night’s show… you can see how excited students were…

    … the comradery…

    … the talent…

    and the sophistication! The students really were outstanding in their roles!

    And on closing night this past Saturday, cast and crew presented gifts of appreciation to the amazing staff/adults who guided them over the past 6 months: Mrs. Thorpe, Mr. McMath, and Ms. Garland.

DIVERSITY AND RESPECT WEEK AT LSS!

  • LSS staff and students joined forces in small ways to ensure that we all work together to make a big difference in helping ALL students and staff feel welcome and respected, no matter the differences.
    • On Tuesday, LSS staff showed APPRECIATION for our students with a very simple morning greeting and a small piece of candy.
    • On Wednesday, we all wore pink to show that, in spite of our differences, we can all be respectful and strive to understand our differences; in fact, it is our diversity that makes the larger group stronger!
    • On Friday, we ended the week with a Saints Spirit day, where students and staff alike wore LSS Saints clothing.  The message here is that no matter our differences, we have more in common than not; it is our unity that gives the larger group common language and common purpose!

      The messages we give ourselves really do impact how we interact with the world around us… positivity matters!

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

NEW BUILD UPDATE

  • WEST STUDENT PARKING LOT DISRUPTION:  The SOUTH entrance to the student parking lot will be CLOSED starting on Monday of this upcoming week, for several days.  Unitech needs to install a new fire department connection to the Fire line in the West (student) parking lot.  They will need to block off the entrance beside the water vault (entrance by the portables) as they will be trenching from the existing water connection.  Please use the northern most entrance for both entering and exiting the lot.

  • This entrance, near the portables and the Fine Arts hallway, will be closed off, and this part of the parking lot will be unavailable for parking.

KWANTLEN XCEL INFO SESSION 

  • Interested in getting a taste of post-secondary courses, without having to pay tuition?  The Kwantlen XCEL Program offers this opportunity to a limited number of grade 11 students in the Langley School District.  If you would like to find out more, please attend the Information Session at the Langley School Board Office.  Details below:

HOLOCAUST SYMPOSIUM MAKES FOR POWERFUL LEARNING

  • This past week, students from around the Langley School District travelled to DW Poppy for a very powerful day of learning at the Holocaust Symposium, with speakers Dr. Suedfeld (survivor who shared his testimony) and Dr. Huebel.

TRADES TOURS THIS PAST WEEK A HUGE SUCCESS!

  • This past week, about 200 students in grades 10-12 from around Langley School District travelled on buses to the different Trades programs around the District to get a sense of the different opportunities available to them to help them graduate with “job-ready” skills and hours towards apprenticeships.  It was an amazing day for students to learn about these different careers options, and to try some hands-on activities.  Many students certainly had a better sense of what they might be interested in pursuing in the next two years!  From an LSS perspective, we are proud to say that we had over 2 bus-loads of students – more than 70 students in total, giving us the prize for the school with the most student participation in the District!  Thanks to the CLE 10 teachers, Mr. Dickson, and especially to Mrs. Blessing – your work will definitely pay dividends for these students, as many will now have a clearer vision of what their future career might be!

  • Students went to Kwantlen Polytechnic University to look into the Horticulture program.

    Students also went to Walnut Grove Secondary and sampled ice cream made by students in the Culinary Arts program.

    The Culinary program at WGSS is affiliated with the VCC program in Vancouver.

    Students were welcomed to Aldergrove Secondary to see the Hairstyling program.

    Students get pampered and fresh Hair styles are given as they checked out the Hairstylist program!

    Of course, all this exploring creates hungry students – pizza anyone?!

    Next stop? DW Poppy and the Electrical Program.

    The Electrical Program is connected to BCIT in Burnaby.

    ACSS is where the District’s Carpentry Program is located.

    The ACSS program is affiliated with KPU’s Carpentry Program.

    ACSS also is home to the District’s Auto Mechanic program.

    ACSS even has its own race car!

    And finally, LSS has our own Apprenticeship program: Piping & Plumbing!

    Our P & P students are working with the touring students to give them a hands on experience!

BLESSING!!!  We have a whole new set of Careers Tours for the start of 2019!  Please see the attached below for more information… and then be sure to have your student sign up/apply for one or more that may be of interest! (Note that the last one below is for parents and guardians and is THIS WEEK!!)

REMINDER!  PAC PIZZA FUNDRAISER!

  • Langley Secondary PAC is selling Panago Certificates to raise funds to support school initiatives.
  • For each $12 Panago certificate you buy, you can get ANY MEDIUM PIZZA at ANY PANAGO LOCATION. More than one certificate can be used at one time, making these certificates ideal for birthday parties, team parties, Friday night hangouts, etc… The only restriction is that the certificate should be used within 90 days of the date stamped on the certificate.
  • There are 50 certificates available each month. Certificates will be distributed “first come, first served” based on when payment is received. You will receive an email to confirm that your payment has been received and when your certificates will be delivered to the school office.

    Notice how the use of Flexible furniture allows sharing of ideas in new and interesting ways… Here, group ideas are collected on a writeable whiteboard table!

    Staff also get to do hands-on learning… this is an activity at our last Staff Meeting led by Mr. Powell and Ms. Decambra showing how prototyping and ADST/Design Thinking (part of the new curriculum) can be a part of a lesson in any department!

LSS CLUBS AND TEAMS

  • Clubs and teams are an important part of life at LSS.  Getting involved is one of the ingredients to a successful school year…  So, take a moment to see what your student what might be interested in, and encourage him/her to go these rooms below to find out more!
    • The LSS Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) will be meeting at lunch time in Ms. Lee’s room, 218. This is a safe space for students to hang out and have open discussion. Anyone is welcome to attend!
    • Manga Club:  Are you interested in Manga, anime of Japanese-style art?  The Manga Club will be meeting Wednesdays after school in the Library.
    • After School Dance Club! Dance club is currently on hiatus.  Dance Club will be starting again Feb. 19th Tuesdays at Lunch in the Dance Studio.
    • KnitWits Club:  Would you like to relax and learn a new skill?  Would you like to learn how to knit?  Please feel free to join us on Thursdays at lunch in Room 145. (Ms. Lee’s Foods Room).  The club is open to anyone, beginners to advanced knitters are welcome.
    • WEX (Work Experience) Wednesday Flex:  Students who are registered or interested in Work Experience, please join us on Wednesdays during Flex Block in Room 136.
    • Grad Council meets every Tuesday at lunch in the small gym – Grade 12s are invited to impact their grad year, and make it the best grad year ever!  See Mrs. Thornburn if you have ay questions!
    • LSS Debate and Model UN Club: Join us every Thursday at lunchtime in Room 220. Members will learn how to debate, examine current events, and prepare for upcoming MUN conferences and debate tournaments. New members are always welcome.
    • Tabletop Thursdays with Mr. Nicol in Room 111 Thursdays at lunch and after school – come and find out what different tabletop games and activities are being offered!
    • ME to WE Club:  If you are looking to volunteer, give back to your community and learn more about local and global issues, join ME to WE Club!  ME to WE Club runs Wednesdays at lunch in Room 213.

  • THIS WEEK! SECOND Annual West Fine Art Show – We are nearing that time of year again! The District, Langley School District Foundation and West Fine Art Show are getting ready to put on the SECOND Annual West Fine Art Show at YORKSON CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL March 8 – 10. It will feature the works of 20 renowned, professional artists from throughout Western Canada (with artists in attendance) and part of the proceeds goes to support Art programs in our district. We would like to invite your grade 8-12 students to showcase their artwork ….please select the top TWO works from your school to be professionally exhibited.  The artwork should be no larger than 11 x 14 and should be mounted on canvas or frame with wire on the back for proper mounting.Teachers are asked to please arrange for pick up or delivery to Susan Cairns at the Langley School Board Office. Deadline for submissions: March 1st at 3 pm
    • This is an EXCELLENT opportunity for our upcoming artists to show their work alongside professional artists and to be viewed and appreciated by a sophisticated and appreciative crowd of art patrons.
  • 14th Annual Grand Prix Gala – Sunday, May 26th at Thunderbird Show Park
    • This is a premiere event taking place during an International Horse Jumping Competition. Guests arrive, decked out in splendid hats and rural chic garb – anything from jeans to summers frocks. You are shown to tables on a sunlit patio, just inches away from the magnificent beasts and their riders and from 1 to 4 pm you are treated to an endless array of Milner cheeses, savory hors d’oeurves, wine and craft beer tastings and decadent desserts all while watching an international horse jumping competition.

  • INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL STATUS DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER
    • Snow closures and power outages are an annual occurrence in Langley School District.  So where do you go to get information about the status of schools during periods of inclement weather?  If you are able to access the internet via computer or smartphone, current information about Langley schools can be accessed on all school websites or www.sd35.bc.ca.  Updates are also posted to Twitter @LangleySchools and Facebook at www.facebook.com/langleyschooldistrict.  If you don’t have internet connectivity but your phone is working, call a relative or friend in an area that has not been affected by the storm and ask them to check the district website for you.  Local radio stations are also informed of school status in Langley. Tune in to CKWX 1130AM, CKNW 980AM, Country Radio 107.1FM, Pulse 107.7 or CBC 690AM or 88.1FM for updates.
    • Please note that Langley District schools are all considered ‘open’ until a decision to close is required.  Decisions on school closures are usually made by 6:30am.  As always, it is a parent’s decision whether to send their child to school based on safety and individual circumstances.  If you feel it is unsafe for you or your child to travel to or attend an open school for any reason, please keep your child home and report an absence to the school.

  • Please find attached the Langley Youth Hub and Friends of Dorothy March 2019 calendars as well as the poster for our LGBTQ2S+ Youth Clinic.
    • Hub programming will be open in February  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 6 pm. Tuesdays will remain open from 6pm-7pm on dates when the doctor is here for any youth who are booked to access medical care. 30 Youth Calendar March 2019
