With only about 4 weeks left in classes for the school year, the messages of “Stay Focussed” and “Finish Strong” are more true than ever, especially as the weather continues to be relatively warm and sunny. Students and teachers have worked hard all semester, learning new ideas and concepts, and pushing themselves to develop new skills and understandings. We don’t want all of this success to be undermined by a few weeks of poor decisions. So, to help, here are some actions you can take to keep your student on the track to success:
- talk to your student about being on time in the mornings,
- remind them that we have a Breakfast Club at LSS from 8 am to 8:30 am that can help kickstart their day,
- ask them if they have homework at the end of the school day (and if they say No, get them to sit and review for at least 45 minutes everyday, anyways… it’s amazing what they suddenly remember they have to do!)
- email their teachers or call the admin or counsellors if you suspect that something isn’t quite right with attendance or assignment completion – your instincts are probably right!
GRAD GAB!
- Grade 12 Grad Ceremony Reception – Call-Out to Grad Parents! A tradition at LSS tradition is for the parents of grads is to bring a “finger food” dish to CLA for the Grad Ceremony Reception. Some examples of dishes include: egg rolls, sushi, pizza, meatballs, cookies, and other baked goods/desserts. Of course, don’t let this list limit you – the options are as varied as you want them to be! How it works: when you come to the Grad Ceremony on June 21, please bring your “finger food” dish to the reception room at the back of CLA before you grab your seat – it’s that simple! And, of course, thank you in advance for your help in carrying on this LSS tradition!
- Grads, you are reminded that you must be in position to graduate, have all fees paid, as well as all overdue textbooks/library books either returned to the Library or fines paid prior to picking up Ceremony Tickets or purchasing Grad Dinner Dance Tickets.
- Grad Ceremony Tickets: If you have not yet picked up your three complimentary ceremony tickets, please do so in the Main Office at lunchtime.
- Grad Dinner Dance Tickets: Dinner Dance Tickets will be on sale at lunchtime on Tuesday, May 29thin the Main Office. Tickets are $65 each. CASH ONLY. Students wishing to sit together MUST come to the office to purchase tickets at the same time to ensure being assigned the same table number.
- REMINDER – RUNNING OUT OF TIME! Grad Stage Comments – It is time to start thinking about what your Grad wants said as she/he crosses the stage! If you are in a 2nd Semester English 12 or Comm 12 class, you will be doing this exercise in class. If you are NOT, then please go to the link below https://lss.sd35.bc.ca/news-events/news/ – Under “News” for April 6, 2018, please click on the link there to read more about the criteria, and to write your Grad Stage Comment!

KINDNESS ROCKS AT LSS!
- Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, LSS was able to host three concerts this past Thursday, May 24 that had the theme “Kindness Rocks.” Students from every middle school in the Langley District (HDSMS, YCMS, BGMS, BSS, LFMS), as well as from Noel Both Elementary, Nicomekl Elementary, Brookswood Secondary, and, of course our very own Grade 9s and 10s heard speakers share their stories of overcoming obstacles, combined with music and an amazing atmosphere! In total, more than 3000 students from the Langley School District got to experience an extremely positive and uplifting message of hope and resiliency. Thanks to Susan Cairns from the Langley Foundation, Ms. Yun from the SBO, Mr. Hendy from HD Stafford, the LSS Leadership students, Mrs. Thorpe and the LSS Choir, Mr. McCuaig, Mr. Hantke, and Mr. Palichuk for their behind the scenes work to ensure that this day would be an incredible success!

- My name is Dorsa and I am the President of Young Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), a student-run club at UBC. Our mission is to support and empower young women transitioning from high school to their undergraduate education to a successful career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). We have a tutor mentoring program where we provide one-on-one academic support and mentorship with young girls who are passionate in challenging STEM subjects.
- We are committed to improving our community and, in the process, strengthening youth leadership skills through hands-on stewardship projects. We work alongside non-profit, public and private organizations such as Rick Hansen Foundation and Neil Squire Society to create events like the Innovation Challenge, in which undergraduate students take part of an interactive evening of talks from leading experts in entrepreneurship, health sciences research, and biomedical engineering, and finally, create and present a solution to an access challenge question for people with disabilities.
- We are holding our inaugural Young WISE Networking and Women’s Empowerment Event on Sunday, June 3rd to give young females an opportunity to meet with professional women with successful careers in STEM and other fields. The event will be held from 2:00 – 4:30 PM at the Fleetwood Library in the Surrey. We are inviting female high school students in our community and we would appreciate if you can share this event with the students at Langley Secondary School. I have attached the event poster as well.
- The event has limited spots and we are asking students to fill out the form below to RSVP for the event: https://goo.gl/forms/w73C8NN7xMjSeYRH3
