The Saints Scoop! – May 3, 2020

May 3, 2020

  • NEW – Message to the Grads From the District:
    • Banquet/Prom Postponements – As you know, grad banquets and prom celebrations are not going ahead this year as usual due to the provincial ban on large events. District and school staff share the disappointment students and families are feeling. We care about our grads and want to honour them in way that is healthy, safe, and meaningful. Our administrators and staff are willing to work with our school community in helping find a solution beyond June. We are able to collaborate and support any potential parent-driven initiatives. Please be advised the commitment from administrators and staff must be reasonable and within their capacity. We appreciate your ongoing support during this challenging time.
    • We are continuing to work with other Secondary schools in Langley, as well as with the District, to find a way to honour our graduates this June.  We have been in contact with Fraser Health and are close to developing a plan that will follow the appropriate health and safety guidelines, while still giving our Grads of 2020 a memorable, though different, experience.  We hope to announce what Grad Ceremony 2020 will look in next week’s Scoop, or earlier, if possible.
    • Letters have been prepared and will be mailed home on Monday, arriving at your home over the next week or so.  In these letters, your student will be in one of the following categories:
      • On the Grad List, with enough credits and passing all courses.
      • On Grad List, but… only barely passing one or more mandatory courses.
      • Not on Grad List at present, due to currently failing one or more mandatory courses; this CAN change if the teacher is contacted, and the student is passing the course by June 1.
      • Not graduating, due to missing credits or courses.
    • The letter will also state that your student needs to work hard and turn in assignments until the end of the school year to either continue to be on the Grad List OR to try and get back on the Grad List.  Whatever the case, we want all of our students to FINISH STRONG in the last two months of their high school years!
    • ***Please note that students CAN get back on the Grad List if they QUICKLY fix whatever problem is holding them back!
  • NEW – Langley Teachers Association (LTA) Scholarship – It is $800  (1 per high school!!!). The deadline has been extended to May 20 and you can fill out the application online at
  • NEW – KPU UPDATE:  Fraser Valley Next Steps Presentation May 20th
  • Dry Grad Update
    • With the decisions above, the Dry Grad Committee regretfully must also announce that its June event is also cancelled.  We will will let you know if there are any changes or updates.

  • Learning at LSS continues weekly.  You can expect a lesson and/or assignments for Block 1 this Monday, the same for Block 2 on Tuesday, and so on.  Please know that your teachers are available to all their students through office hours (usually on Teams), through individual chat on Teams, and/or through email.  We also have a superb support staff who are connecting with students and spending hours on the phone or on Teams, helping individual students with their questions and challenges.
  • Help is available if you need it!  Please contact your teacher first for assistance.  Counsellors and Admin are also available if you need assistance.  Call the school at 604-534-4171 or use individual email:

  • The new GetMyPEN application is now live. This application streamlines the Personal Education Number (PEN) retrieval process and provides a secure platform for former students to provide Personal Information such as photo ID. Individuals who attended K-12 in BC will need a Basic BCeID in order to log into GetMyPEN. To Register for a Basic BCeID and/or log in to request a PEN using GetMyPEN, please visit the Getting Your Personal Education Number (PEN) page.

  • Family & Community Support Webpage
    • District and school staff are continuing to provide support for our families during this challenging time. The District website has a new Family & Community Support page to help parents/guardians cope with the impacts of COVID-19. This page includes links to resources including a comprehensive guide developed by the Langley Children Committee, containing health, housing, and financial support information. On this page you will also find a new weekly blog launched by Gail Markin, who is our District Teacher for Social Emotional Learning. She will be covering a new health and wellness topic every time. Thank you to our community partners for their ongoing support. Visit the page here
  • Educational Technology Support
    • As we continue our journey into at-home learning, our staff are continuing to roll out information for families on different technology platforms and how to get connected. Microsoft Classroom TEAMS and myBlueprint are being widely used across the District. You can find a new Educational Technology Support page on the District website with detailed instructions for these two apps. Visit the page here. If you require more assistance with technology, you can get technical support at 778-726-4508 or at

Speaking of pets, Mr. Moino’s family is “fostering” a rescue dog for a few weeks. Her name is Fiona and she just arrived yesterday (Saturday)!  And yes, he has never had a dog before, never wanted one, but is having a change of heart…!

Fiona, after lots of travel, getting some rest in a quieter moment…  How adorable is that, Mr. Moino!
