- Kwantlen Polytechnic University(KPU) – See the attachments below to learn more about numerous opportunities that KPU is offering in the coming weeks, on November 8 and 25, to grade 12 students thinking about attending KPU Surrey campus!
- Scholarship Opportunity – North America Van Lines Canada, a large international moving company is offering $1000 scholarships to students who are pursuing a degree in logistics, chain management, business or a similar field. https://www.northamericanvanlines.ca/scholarship. The application form and additional details about applying for the scholarship are available at the above link. All applications must be complete and submitted by December 15, 2019.

- Dry Grad parties typically offer an exciting and absorbing variety of fun activities, compelling entertainment and valuable prizes in order to entice graduates and their guests to attend and experience a fun time without alcohol and other substances. Dry Grad parties offer the students a time to celebrate their educational achievements in a safe, fun environment with their school friends before venturing out in to the “real world”.
- October 15 through 18 – grade 12 students will be eligible to vote for what activities they would like to have available to participate in during the Dry Grad event. Ballot boxes will be in the Artona photo trailer as well as at the LSS New Build Library. Please ensure to stop by and have your say in your celebration.

- House of Commons Page Program – We are pleased to announce the official launch of the recruitment campaign for the House of Commons Page Program. Our recruitment campaign for the 2020-2021 academic year will take place from September 23 to November 11, 2019.
- Each year, we recruit 40 students graduating from high schools from across Canada to participate in the House of Commons Page Program. Students who maintain a minimum average of 80% and can speak both official languages are invited to apply. To be selected, they must also be accepted in a full‑time program at a university in the National Capital Region.

- Students need to pay grad fee and student fees and have completed permission slip to purchase tickets.

LSS FOOTBALL PLAYING AS A TEAM!
- Congratulations to the LSS Football team, who keep playing strong football, and who keep winning! This past Friday, the Varsity team defeated #5 ranked Robert Bateman by a score of 42-6. It was the Offensive line and the running game that helped the Saints take control of the game, with another strong effort by the defence and special teams to ensure a victory. PARKING LOT UPDATE
- The back parking lot (behind the New Building) was paved on Friday at LSS. Painting will occur next week, if the weather cooperates. Once this lot is completed, this should make access to the New Building so much easier for everyone! More details to come.
LSS MAKES LEARNING MORE VISIBLE AND ACTIVE!
Each week, we will highlight different classes throughout the school that have students being more active, and that help make the students’ learning more visible – one of our three big goals for this school year See below for this week’s highlights:
- In an example of “Discovery Learning” and putting the Scientific Method to practice, Mr. Jackson’s Chemistry 11 students had to determine how to separate the different substances using whatever equipment and materials they deemed appropriate. This type of discovery and thinking is central to how scientists think and learn about the world and make new discoveries. This is also an example of authentic learning, where the classroom context mirrors real-life challenges!
- Students in Law 12 learned more about the upcoming federal election! Block 1 Law class got the opportunity of asking passionate AVID student Navid questions regarding laws and political parties for deeper understanding around the federal election! Those who know Navid also know that he is a “political aficionado” – thanks for sharing your knowledge, Navid!
- AS detailed in previous Scoops, the FOCUS program takes students on a monthly Mood Walk, where they explore different parts throughout the Lower Mainland while learning about the importance of nature and exercise. This past week, the students went to Minnekhada Regional Park in Coquitlam, where the stunning views seen below were a part of the day, as well as meeting a local – and, yes, our students and staff certainly kept a safe distance!
- Mr. Smith also hosts our Conversation Cafe/Game Club during Flex, where students from different parts of the world come together to practice English while meeting new friends! Want more details? See Mr. Smith in Portable 6!
LSS TUTORING AVAILABLE STARTING THIS WEEK!
- Starting October 16, LSS Graduate and current UFV student Conner Frey, and Ms. Wood and Ms. Sewell have teamed up to have Leadership students provide a FREE student tutoring service, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays after school! See Ms. Wood or Ms. Sewell in Room A210 or A211 to find out more!
LSS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FAIR – NOVEMBER 16!
- LSS Annual Christmas Fair is being held on Saturday, November 16 from 9AM to 3PM in the big gym. Please “like” our page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/lsscraftfair/ and help us share the news with your friends. Admission is by donation and all funds raised are returned to LSS for student programs.

CAREERS CORNER!
- Many LSS grade 11 and 12 students went to the annual Canadian University Event (CUE) this past week, where they were able to meet with representatives from different Canadian universities and other post-secondary opportunities and ask questions. It was an inspiring and thought-provoking day for students as they contemplated their futures!
- We also have Take Our Kids to Work (TOKTW) Day coming soon, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 and we need forms returned by Friday, October 25! Please seen the attachments for a parent letter, and a form for return!

Thanks to our Counsellor, Mr. Lewis, who was gracious enough to visit Ms. Pais-Martins class and share his passion for poetry!
Special evening for our girls’ volleyball program! Both jr and sr girls went to watch former Saint, Kalyn Hartmann play NCAA volleyball at her university-SFU. The girls had a blast, and SFU won against Seattle Pacific University!
Here is Mr. Fauteux’s class turning a grammar lesson into an interactive group exercise, where he uses technology (students hold Plicker cards and use QR codes) to know how students are answering questions right in the moment – and where students and teacher are applying the learning and making corrections, in real time!

LSS CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES!
- Join the Alliance for Sustainability Club! – Monday’s at lunch, this alliance will work towards creating a greener school and spreading environmental awareness. Come support the movement and share your ideas. Everyone is welcome! Come to room A202 Monday at lunch! This can also count towards your volunteer hours!
- Athletics and Physical Health and Education – Interested in keeping up-to-date with what is happening in the world of Athletics and Physical Health and Education (PHE) at LSS? Then be sure to follow @langleysaints on Instagram!
- LSS Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) – meetings at lunch every Tuesday in Ms. Lee’s rm. #A112– This is a safe space for students to hang out and have open discussion. Anyone is welcome to attend

- Model UN Club: the LSS Model United Nations Club is starting. New members are encouraged to join us this Thursdayat lunch in Room A215 (Ms.Cunningham’s).

COMMUNITY NEWS
- Grief Awareness Day – November 14th – Langley Hospice in partnership with Dougy Centre, Township of Langley, Langley School District Foundation, and Langley City, is offering a free workshop for parents, teachers and school counsellors, entitled True Blue: Best Practices to Provide Meaningful Support to Grieving Children & Teens. Poster is attached.
- The KidSport Langley Committee is hoping that school administrators will help spread the word to parents regarding the financial assistance available to Langley families who would like their children to participate in organized sport but may not have the funds for registration. KidSport Langley provides grants of up to $300 per child for a season of sport. The funds are available and the application process is quite simple.
